November/December Holiday Assignment

You are to start each of the following tasks on a fresh piece of foolscap paper. All the task are due on the first English lesson in 2011. You are to submit them to your English teacher and it will be counted as a component of your Continual Assessment.

Task 1: Book review
You are to write a book review on a storybook that you read over the holidays. The book must be one that you have enjoyed reading. In your book review, you must answer the following questions in at least 250 words.
-          What is the plot of the book?
-          Who is your favourite character in the story and why?
-          Why would you recommend the book to your peers?

In your book review, you have to convince your reader that your book is worth reading and is page-turner. Your book review must be authentic and there should be no plagiarism.

Task 2: Movie review
You are to watch a movie over the holidays. The criteria for the movie are stated below.
1.       Must be longer than 60 mins.
2.       Must be within your age group. (i.e. PG13 and below)
3.       Must be in English Language

White watching the move, you are to take note of the following:
1.       The main plot of the movie
2.       2 memorable scenes that use the techniques that you have learnt during the course of your SEC2 lessons. Eg,
i.                    Flash back
ii.                  Slow motion
iii.                Elements of visual literacy (eg, angled shots, distance of shots, use of lighting)

Task 2i: On a fresh piece of paper, draw out a narrative curve. Using 10 sentences, write out the main plot of the movie (intro, problem/build up, climax, resolution) on the narrative curve.
Task 2ii: On a separate piece of paper, highlight 2 memorable scenes explaining how the techniques were used and why you found them memorable. (100 words each)
